In the previous case lesions were discovered, suggesting some sort of bacterial infection. However DARD insists there is no evidence to suggest the deaths are part of a rising trend. The West Virginia Department of Agriculture says it has activated its homeland security incident management team to assess the situation at the property in Greenbrier County. Local reports indicate up to 26 horses have been found dead on the property, thought to be about 300 acres, since a tipoff to county officials on Wednesday. A feed and grain store is just a few hundred metres from the property in Crawley, where the dead animals were found. West Virginia's agriculture commissioner, Gus Douglass, said his department had the duty to ensure the carcasses were disposed of properly to protect the environment and the health of other animals. He said his team left the department's headquarters at Guthrie early on Thursday afternoon local time and would report back once they assess the situation. He said he was disturbed by the discovery. "It seems we're seeing more of these incidents in recent years - particularly with horses - and I find that very distressing. "Farmers have a moral obligation to care for their animals, and the vast majority of them do so. But there are a few that, for whatever reason, fall short of those responsibilities." While the agriculture department has broad authority when it comes to controlling infectious diseases in farm animals, state law gives county sheriffs or their designees authority over animal welfare issues. "Some people believe that the Department of Agriculture is responsible for the welfare of farm animals, but that's simply not the case. "If we receive a report of distressed animals, we can enter a farm to see if the cause is disease related. If not, that's where our authority ends," said One report from West Virginia suggested a law enforcement official visiting the property saw 14 dead horses as he headed up the old road to an abandoned farmhouse on the property. A man is under investigation over the treatment of the horses and faces two counts of midemeanour animal cruelty, a report suggests. Further reports indicate the man at the centre of the investigation has interests in other properties, which are also being checked.

Department spokesperson Kevin Hutchinson said numerous reports had come in from concerned residents and wetland users about the deaths, numbering possibly in the hundreds of thousands. While most are pests such as koi carp and catfish, native species mullet, bullies and eels have also been found dead. "The drought at the end of 2010 exposed large areas of the wetland and rapid plant growth occurred in areas usually under water. High rainfall in January compounded by the baked dry ground in the catchment meant water rapidly ran off into the wetland and water levels remained consistently high for about three consecutive weeks." Kevin Hutchinson says the decomposing plant matter started a bacterial process which depletes oxygen in the water.

The warm humid weather experienced over summer has kept water temperatures and thus enhancing bacterial growth. Tests conducted with an oxygen meter by DOC rangers yesterday confirmed the very low levels of oxygen present in the water. "This is further evidenced by the layer of oily scum present on the surface of the water, which are natural oils released by decomposing plants, the dark black colour of the water and the soft, wilting emergent vegetation starting to break down. The decomposition is also identifiable by an unpleasant smell, very similar to that from a compost bin." Water levels in the wetlands were kept higher than natural during the recent big rain events by the operation of established regional flood control measures. The gate letting water from the wetlands to the Waikato River was closed in order to reduce the risk of flooding of farmlands around the wetlands. "Things are unlikely to improve until either the water level drops right down exposing the wetland floor or we get another significant rainfall event flushing the water through the wetland system," Kevin Hutchinson says. "This event has a positive side with the removal of a large amount of pest fish biomass. However, large scale fish diebacks have been known to cause negative impacts on some bird populations, for example shags and heron. A similar event occurred in summer 2004.

When residents in Mescitli village in Gümüshane province first observed dead fish in Harºit stream 15 days ago, they thought the fish had died of natural causes, said village head Cenk İnce. “However, when we realized the number of dead fish had risen, we urgently informed the officials. There were fish for two kilometers along the shore, which worried us. We are using the stream’s water in our agricultural activities,” İnce said, according to the Doğan news agency, or DHA. He added that the villagers have urged officials to investigate immediately.

The provincial directorates of health, forest, environment and agricultural have reportedly launched an investigation, taking samples of the dead fish and the water from the stream. Locals believe the deaths are due to pollution. “The fish died due to pollution produced by people,” one villager said. “Forty years ago, we and our animals were able to drink the stream water.

Water for our crops was provided from the stream. Now there is nothing growing here, life has ended here,” DHA quoted a local resident as saying. The village has never seen anything like the fish deaths before, said resident Tacettin İnce. Provincial Health Ministry Director Osman Öztürk said the ministry is charged with investigating the implications of the fish deaths for human health, but that environmental impacts should be analyzed as well. “The pollution here, which could even be seen with one’s eyes, may have caused the mass deaths,” he said, adding that fishing facilities in the Torul and Kürtün reservoirs should be warned as well. “If necessary, we will send the water samples to the Erzurum Provincial Hygiene Institute Directorate,” Öztürk said, noting that he has been informed about the issue in conversations with local residents and with the provincial head for epidemic diseases, Müjde İlgün. “We are collaborating with provincial agricultural ministry officials. We have decided to establish a crisis management center due to the deaths,” he said. Resident Tacettin İnce said reservoirs that were cleaned by the municipality might have caused the water to be polluted when hazardous residue from the cleaning solution mixed with the Harºit stream. He added that even animals in the village do not eat the local crops, which has forced residents to purchase the grains they use to feed their animals from other towns, the Anatolia news agency reported.

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Wildlife officials say they have no idea what is killing thousands of ducks and geese along Lake Erie and the Maumee River.

When they first discovered the trend a few weeks ago, only a few birds were infected. As of Friday, around 200 birds have been linked to the mystery illness.

Infected birds simply throw their heads back and lose their motor skills before they die.

No one knows how far it could spread.

"This may be something that's not at all going to affect people, but it may be, and we need to figure it out to know what's going on," said Nature's Nursery's Laura Zitzelberger.

So far, labs tests confirm that the birds did not die of the avian flu.

State wildlife officials say they may never know what is causing the deaths, but that it could be a natural occurrence.

5 million aquatic animals die at Mara river in Kenya

The National Environmental Management Authority (Nema), Public Health Ministry and Kenya Wildlife Service are investigating the deaths of fish in Mara River.

Conservationists suspect the deaths that started last week might have been caused by agro chemicals from farms, that drain into the river. Hoteliers in Masai Mara Game Reserve are now expressing fear that the chemicals might kill animals that depend on the river.

“The deaths couldhave been caused by agro chemicals from large scale farms on the upper side of the river. The chemicals might also kill hippos, crocodiles and other animals that drink water from the river,” said Ben Kipeno, a conservationist from the northern side of the reserve. Mr Kipeno said on Wednesday there were unconfirmed reports that apart from fish, a crocodile and a hippo have already succumbed to effects of the chemicals. He urged the Government to rein in farmers along the river who use potent chemicals and claimed that despite several complaints to Nema no action has been taken. Officials from KWS who were dispatched from Nairobi took samples of the fish to the Government Chemist for further tests to ascertain the cause of the deaths. When The Standard visited the river, dead fish were floating with scavengers, including the Marabou stork, feeding on them. The Narok South Nema officer in charge Gabriel Tambushi said initial reports had indicated that more than five million fish were killed at the confluence of the seasonal Moyan River in Transmara with the Mara following a heavy flood.
“The sudden change of weather that resulted into heavy mist covering the water surface, inhibiting fish and other animals that depend on the river from breathing might have been the cause of the deaths,” said Tambushi. He did not rule out poisonous agro chemicals from farms, which depended on Mara River for irrigation.

The stranded whales were discovered by hikers Sunday near Cavalier Creek on Stewart Island, off the southern tip of New Zealand's South Island. Conservation department staff flew to the area and found that about half of the group were already dead and the others were dying, the agency said in a statement. The whales were well up the beach and the tide was receding, leaving little chance of keeping them alive until more rescuers could arrive. "Euthanasia is a difficult decision, but is made purely for the welfare of the animal involved to prevent it from prolonged suffering," said Brent Beaven, the official who led the team at the site. Pilot whales are about 13 feet to 20 feet (4 meters to 6 meters) long and are the most common species of whale in New Zealand waters. Whale strandings are common in New Zealand. Last month, 24 pilot whales died after stranding on the North Island. In December 2009, more than 120 whales died in two separate beachings near Golden Bay and on the east coast of North Island.

Hoang Van Thong, head of the province’s Environmental Protection Department, said the fishes were killed by the increasing pollution in the Dong Nai River. Thong added that a large amount of untreated wastewater from households and enterprises in the city was discharged into the river. In addition, the number of fish cages in the region has increased up to 800, much higher than the maximum permissible number of 200. The rapid increase has resulted in a reduction of oxygen concentration in the water. The local authorities have tried to reduce the number of fish cages by way of voluntary relocation. The deadline for the relocation is end of May. A similar event involving the death of a massive number of fishes happened in June 2010. The cause was also attributed to water pollution.

Deaths of baby dolphins worry scientists - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Baby bottlenose dolphins are washing up dead in record numbers on the shores of Alabama and Mississippi, alarming scientists and a federal agency charged with monitoring the health of the Gulf of Mexico.
Moby Solangi, the executive director of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) in Gulfport, Mississippi, said Thursday he's never seen such high death numbers.

"I've worked with marine mammals for 30 years, and this is the first time we've seen such a high number of calves," he said. "It's alarming."
At least 24 baby dolphins have washed up on the shores of the two states since the beginning of the year -- more than ten times the normal rate. Also, six older dolphins died.

In January 2009 and 2010, no calf strandings were reported, compared to four in January 2011, the institute said. During the month of February for those years, only one calf stranding was reported each year.
Blair Mase, lead marine mammal stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), echoed Solangi's concern.
"It's not common for this time of year to recover such young animals. When you put the numbers together, it's quite high compared to previous years."
The occurrence has prompted NOAA to designate these deaths as an "unusual mortality event" -- defined as a stranding incident that is unexpected or involves a significant loss of any marine mammal population.
While bottlenose dolphins are actually the most-frequently found stranding animal, the season usually begins in March, according to Mase.
"We receive reports of stranding year round. We get an average of 700 total every year in the Southeast," she said.

While scientists have seen baby dolphins wash up in the past, "This is not during the months that they should be," said Solangi. "We keep getting reports of new ones all the time, and February isn't over yet."
There have been 13 unusual mortality events involving dolphin deaths in the Gulf of Mexico since 1991, Mase explained.

Marine mammals are particularly susceptible to harmful algal blooms, infectious diseases, temperature and environmental changes, and human impact, she said.

"Unfortunately we don't have a smoking gun here. We're looking at the possibility of an algal bloom but we don't see any evidence of a bloom going on in the water. Temperatures are a bit cooler, so we're looking into water temperature data and seeing if that has a role, but it's a little bit too early to tell."

The IMMS said it has been able to perform full necropsies on a third of the 24 calves. The majority of the calves were too decomposed for a full examination, but the institute has taken tissue samples for analysis.
The institute does not have conclusive results on the causes of death.
Following the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion last April, which killed 11 workers and caused the worst oil spill in U.S. history, there has been heightened concern over the environmental impact.

Due to the government's ongoing litigation with BP, which owned the oil well that erupted into the Gulf of Mexico, NOAA said it must operate under specific protocol in handling the dead dolphins. That might mean a delay in seeing the necropsy results.

"In a world when we wouldn't be dealing with oil-spill protocols, we'd typically get results in about three weeks to a month," Mase said. "We aren't going to see results as quickly as we'd like to. We will be making sure these samples are collected, taken back and analyzed, but it could take several months."

While none of the 30 dolphins were found with any oil on them, Mase said the agency is not ruling anything in or out on the cause of death.
"Frankly, it's just too early to tell at this point. It's obviously on everyone's radar screen. Everyone's concerned about any impact of the BP oil spill, but we have to be very cautious as to identify any particular cause. We won't know until we have these samples analyzed and be able to identify the source."

The most worrisome concern is that dolphin stranding season has yet to officially begin, according to Solangi.

"Whatever it is, I hope it is just an anomaly. It certainly has connotations on reproduction and the population," he said.
"Unfortunately, I think this is not the end of what we will be seeing."

Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries agents say it is an unusually high number of dolphins found dead or dying. LDWF Marine Mammal Strandings Coordinator Mandy Tumlin says 26 dolphins have been found beached since the first of the year in the state. She says the oil spill doesn't easily explain all the animal deaths, "There was an increased in mortalities observed in 2010, that were being investigated prior to the oil spill." Tumlin says not all beached dolphins found have been dead. She says one was recovered alive and is getting medical treatment and another seemed fine once placed back in open water. She says testing will be done to determine what killed the others. In Louisiana, about 80 dolphin deaths is average for a whole year. Tumlin says necropsy labs are backed up with other oil spill-related testing and it's hard to say when they may know something about the dolphin deaths. Mississippi and Alabama have reported at least 19 dead baby dolphins washing up along the coast.

    Biological Hazard
Location: USA State of Louisiana Gulf Coast

    Situation:
Scientists are baffled as to why the carcasses of a large number of bottlenose dolphins have washed up on beaches and are trying to establish if it is connected to the BP oil spill.
Since the start of the year there have been 29 baby dolphin deaths, compared with 89 in all of 2010. The same thing happened in Texas in March 2007 when 68 dolphins washed up in Galveston and Jefferson, including a large number of infants. The carcasses of 20 infant and stillborn dolphins washed up on the shores of the 130-mile stretch of coastline from Gulfport, Mississippi, east to Gulf Shores, Alabama yesterday.

The remains of about ten adult dolphins, none of them pregnant females, have also been found so far this year. Only one was not a bottlenose. Scientists are looking at possible causes like cold winter and disease. But they are also investigating whether there was a link to the BP oil spill. though the spike in deaths has only occurred in one species. Moby Solangi, director of the non-profit Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, says scientists have taken tissue samples in hopes of solving the mystery. He revealed that it was about ten times the number normally found washed up along those two states during this time of the year, which is calving season for some 2,000 to 5,000 dolphins in the region. BP cleanup crews found some of the carcasses. Others were discovered by park rangers, law enforcement officers and passers by. The young dolphins, some barely three feet in length, appeared to have either died shortly after birth or were aborted just before reaching maturity. Mr Solangi said: 'For some reason, they've started aborting or they were dead before they were born.

The average is one or two a month.' None of the carcasses bore any obvious outward signs of oil contamination. But Mr Solangi said necropsies, the equivalent of human autopsies, were being performed and tissue samples taken to determine if toxic chemicals from the oil spill may have been a factor in the deaths.

Initial reports suggest that the problem is NOT Avian Flu but is more likely some form of botulism or other bacterial infection. The source is as yet unknown but a number of dead and rotting sea-fish were found in the area and that is one possible source. Swans are known to be susceptible to this infection and similar cases have been reported from other areas in the past. There were also suggestions that the dredging programme may have disturbed some bacteria in the sediment but this is seen as unlikely given the infected birds are some distance from the dredging site.

    Event: Biological Hazard
Location: USA State of California King Harbor Marina Redondo Beach

Situation: Millions of dead fish were found floating in a California harbor Tuesday after apparently becoming trapped and expiring due to lack of oxygen, experts said. The silver-colored fish appeared overnight at King Harbor in Redondo Beach, where the surface of the water was covered with a layer up to a thick deep in places, said officials. Locals suggested that high winds might have pushed the fish -- initially reported to be anchovies, but later identified as sardines -- into the marina south of Los Angeles. But police spokesman Phil Keenan suggested they were likely chased in by other fish. "We believe the sardines were chased in, probably by some other type of predator fish," said Keenan, adding that millions of fish remained alive outside the marina, with seagulls and sea lions feeding on them. "But these particular sardines got into this basin here, which is a smaller area -- and a confined area -- and we believe they died of oxygen deprivation." Local official Bill Workman said the water was not polluted. "There are no visible signs of any toxins that might have caused (the deaths)... There are no oil slicks or leaking of substances into the water," he said. "It looks like what happens to goldfish when you don't change the water in the tank, mouth open and belly up," he told the Los Angeles Times. Keenan added: "Sardines consume a lot of oxygen, and there was not a lot of oxygen in the confined area where they were, and so they died of oxygen deprivation. "It's like putting too many fish in a small aquarium," he said.

Salim Memon of the Karachi Rural Network (KRN), representing 40 non governmental organisations, said that they were collecting the data about the loss of animals in different villages. He said that, so far, the herdsmen could not ascertain the exact cause of the death of the animals. A Gadap Town official, who was reluctant to be named, told The News that he has also received information regarding the death of 25 cows in different villages during the last 24 hours. He stated that there are 3 veterinary hospitals in the town, including one major hospital in Gadap city built in 1965, another in Memon Goth and the 3rd one in Pathan Goth. Apart from this, he said the town had also launched a mobile veterinary clinic to facilitate the livestock owners in the villages. The facility of mobile veterinary clinic was active 4 months back, but now it is inactive. He added that since the staff in veterinary hospitals was appointed on political basis, they are reluctant to attend their respective hospitals and are drawing their monthly salaries. That is why herdsmen are approaching the authorities for help. He said the herdsmen are unable to take their animals to a nearby hospital because they die as soon as they are hit by this strange disease. A herdsman of Gadap said that he had lost 4 cows and he had never witnessed this kind of disease before. They fall and die immediately, he informed this correspondent. According to the data collected from some of the villages in Gadap Town, 4 cows have died in Hamzo Gabol Goth, 3 in Khamiso Goth and 7 cows died in Arif Rind Goth. The local herdsmen were of the view that stagnant water might be the cause of this disease in which animals die instantly, while others believe that there might be a poisonous insect in the green grass, which affects the animals.
