March 2, 2012 – HAWAII - A mysterious cloudy substance is emptying into Kewalo Basin (Honolulu) from a storm drain at an alarming rate. The mystery plume started pouring into Kewalo Basin before sunrise.

“It was like 5:30 in the morning and I was standing here and then all of a sudden it came all at one time,” said Robert St. Romain of Sashimi Fishing Tours. At first light he and other boat owners were stunned by the free flowing plume that turned the water white. “Just was coming out here like crazy just like you see it right now and it muddied the whole harbor in a matter of five minutes. The whole harbor was just glazed over usually you can see down,” said a boater. And it kept coming hundreds of gallons of milky brown fluid every minute. “That storm drain is capable of close to a million gallons a day of water coming through,” said Kewalo Basin Harbor Master Charles Barclay. He said he’s never seen anything like this. “If it was a sewage discharge or if it was an oil discharge we’d smell it but this is a siltation. “Obviously it’s not oil because you don’t see any slick on top,” said boater Michael de Jong. “I don’t know what else it might be. Do you have anything further?” asked Barclay. About a dozen state and city officials were on the scene. Everyone was baffled by the source. City crews visited numerous construction sites and checked for broken water mains but found no clues. “The storm water drain where it’s coming out of connects to an artesian well up by the Blaisdell Center,” said Barclay. He said this is one of 37 storm drains in Kewalo Basin. But this particular drainage was seldom source of storm runoff and the rains weren’t heavy over-night. Barclay says boat owners reported seeing dead fish in the harbor which is home to stingrays, hammerhead sharks and turtles and an occasional visit from monk seals. There’s just no question we don’t want any type of discharges that would impact the marine life,” said Barclay. The cloudy substance that blanketed the harbor made its way to the ocean where unsuspecting surfers, fishermen and divers had already started their day. –Khon 2

March 2, 2012 – BOLIVIA – The San Calixto Observatory director of La Paz, Estela Minaya confirmed that there is a small rise of magma (molten rock in the form of lava and gases) from the volcano Uturuncu, however, but immediately rule out a possible eruption.

Minaya told the Red Erbol said now one of the purposes of the Observatory is to trace the progression of the volcano and to determine how high and fast magma is rising inside the volcano. “Then, (known) that the molten material begins to rise and generates what is seen as a strain at the surface. Studying this method indicates what kind of deformation and “growth,” the volcano is experiencing. Right now, indication there is a slight rise but the magma is rising at a very low speed. Now that this ‘growth’ isn’t very large and can’t generate a volcanic eruption,” he said. He noted that this work takes place two years ago with the interferometer system and the last eruption in Uturuncu would have registered more than 1.6 million years or so. March 2, 2012 – JAKARTA – Volcanic activities in Indonesia’s Mount Semeru keep increasing with 38 tremors on Thursday from around 28 everyday and its danger status remains at level III,

an official told Xinhua. Dr. Surono, head of Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation of Geology Agency (PVMBG) said that the volcano keeps erupting every day, forming volcanic dome and emitting smoke. “Tremor occurs every 15-30 minutes,” said Surono. However, he said that the agency has not yet urged people living surrounding the volcano to evacuate. According to local media, some people in the area are worried of sudden eruption that could destroy their villages following the increasing volcanic activities. Mount Semerun, the highest one in Java Island with height of 3, 676 meters, is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. -EPD

ไฟป่าในอ.สวนผึ้งวิกฤติหนักไหม้แล้วหลายหมื่นไร่

สถานการณ์ไฟป่าในอ.สวนผึ้ง จ.ราชบุรี ซึ่งลุกไหม้มานับเดือนแล้วยังไม่ได้รับการแก้ไข โดยในวันนี้ นายบุหลัน รันตี ประธานกลุ่มคนรักษ์เขากระโจม ต.สวนผึ้ง และเป็นคนหนึ่งในอาสาสมัครดับไฟป่า ได้รวบรวมอาสาสมัครกว่า 30 คน ขึ้นไปช่วยดับไฟป่าที่กำลังลุกไหม้อยู่บนยอดเขาแหลม ซึ่งเป็นยอดเขาที่สูงที่สุดในอ.สวนผึ้ง และเป็นป่าต้นน้ำชั้น 1 เอ แต่ขณะนี้กำลังถูกไฟไหม้ไปแล้วกว่า 20 % และตลอดเส้นทางที่ขึ้นไปดับไฟป่าก็พบว่ามีลักลอบตัดไม้หวงห้ามทั้งไม่ประดู่ และไม้ยาง พร้อมกับทำการแปรรูปจำนวนมากด้วย
นายบุหลัน รันตี ประธานกลุ่มคนรักษ์เขากระโจม ต.สวนผึ้ง และเป็นคนหนึ่งในอาสาสมัครดับไฟป่า กล่าวว่า ขณะนี้สถานการณ์ไฟป่าในพื้นที่อ.สวนผึ้ง รุนแรงกว่าทุกปี อาจจะเป็นเพราะสภาพอากาศที่แล้งจัด โดยเฉพาะพื้นที่ป่าในโครงการอุทยานธรรมชาติวิทยา ในสมเด็จพระเทพฯ นั้นมีพื้นที่กว่า 60,000 -70,000 ไร่ ถูกไฟป่าไหม้ไปหมดแล้ว โดยไม่มีใครเข้าไปช่วยดูแลในการช่วยดับไฟ มีแค่เพียงเจ้าหน้าที่ของโครงการเพียง 5-6 คน เท่านั้นที่ช่วยกันดับอยู่ และที่ผมมาช่วยดับไฟป่ามากว่า 11 ปี ก็ยังไม่เห็นว่าจะมีเจ้าหน้าที่ของหน่วยงานรัฐคนใดมาช่วยเลย 
ตอนนี้ไฟก็กำลังไหม้ป่าในพื้นที่หมู่ 3 บ้านเขาแหลมซึ่งมีพื้นที่กว่า 6-7 หมื่นไร่ อาสาสมัครดับไฟป่าที่มีอยู่ 30-40 คนก็ได้ออกมาช่วยกันดับ โดยไหม้ไปแล้วกว่า 20 % ซึ่งสาเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดไฟป่านั้นก็มาจากคน พอดับตรงนี้ก้ไปจุดตรงโน้น ทำให้เราต้องวิ่งไล่ดับไฟกันเราไม่รู้ว่าเราต่อสู้กับอะไร ทั้งที่อาสาสมัครดับไฟป่านั้นเป็นชาวบ้านมีอาชีพกันทุกคน แต่ก็เสียสละมาช่วยกันดับไฟเพราะทุกคนรักป่า เพราะป่าเป็นหัวใจสำคัญของมนุษย์ ก็อยากเรียกร้องให้หน่วยงานภาครัฐที่เกี่ยวข้อง โดยเริ่มจากผู้ใหญ่บ้าน อบต.ในพื้นที่ และไล่ไปถึงหน่วยงานราชการที่รับผิดชอบ โดยเฉพาะกองพลพัฒนาที่ 1 ซึ่งเป็นหน่วยทหารที่ดูแลพื้นที่ดังกล่าวให้ออกมาดูแล ให้ความสนใจ มาช่วยลาดตระเวณ มาช่วยดับไฟ ซึ่งถ้าช่วยกันทุกหน่วยงาน เชื่อว่าไฟป่าก็จะไม่มีเพราะไม่มีใครกล้าไปจุดไฟเผาป่าอีก
ส่วนพื้นที่ป่าที่ถูกไฟไหม้นั้นก็จะกลายเป็นป่าเสื่อมโทรม มีคนนำเอาต้นไม้แอบไปปลูกและไปทำเรื่องขอเช่า ซึ่งก็เช่าได้ทั้งที่อยู่บนยอดเขาสูงก็เช่าทำกินกัน ทั้งที่เป็นป่าต้นน้ำและในพื้นที่อ.สวนผึ้งก็มีรีสอร์ทเกิดขึ้นมาเยอะมาก ซึ่งก็ต้องใช้น้ำกันทั้งนั้น แต่ตอนนี้ป่าบนเทือกเขาตะนาวศรีนั้นเหลือไม่น่าจะเกิน 1 กม. ที่เป็นป่าต้นน้ำแล้วในอนาคตจะเอาน้ำที่ไหนมาใช้ถ้าปล่อยให้ป่าหมดไป และปล่อยให้ไฟไหม้ป่าโดยไม่มีคนดับ นอกจากนี้ก็อยากให้รัฐบาลหาบทลงโทษผู้ที่ตัดไม้ทำลายป่าให้มากกว่าเพราะทุกวันนี้บทลงโทษนั้นครูตีนักเรียนยังเจ็บกว่าอีก

Thousands of ocean dwellers that look like jellyfish were seen washed ashore this weekend on the sands of the north end of South Padre Island in Texas. They have been identified as the Portuguese Man-of-War, a poisonous siphonophore. Officials points that it was a rare incident and is extremely uncommon in such large numbers. The concentration of jellyfish that was reported was in an isolated area several miles north of County Beach Access No. 6.

The animals are often found in warm waters in groups of 1,000 or more. They have no means of propulsion and rely mostly on wind and ocean currents for movement, which may be what caused them to end up in the sand. Due to high tides on Saturday and Sunday, the beached creatures remained a sight to see until Coastal Resources crews arrived Monday.

Contrary to popular belief, the Portuguese Man O’ War (Physalia physalis) is actually a colonial hydroid. Each individual animal (zooid) specializes in function and are joined together and physiologically integrated to the point where they would not survive separately. Though the invertebrate looks like a jellyfish, it is a colony of organisms that work together and are capable of delivering a venom-filled sting. The venom, used to kill fish and other small organisms, is rarely deadly to humans but can inflict excruciating pain. Contact should be avoided with any Man-of-War regardless of its size. Should a sting occur, meat tenderizer can be applied to the affected area for pain relief.

Different years bring different invasions of marine life, and even mysterious oil spills. One year it was large droves of starfish, and one year there were hog-nose rays and stingrays the bottom looked paved with ‘em. Offshore storms sometimes bring in some kind of odd whip-looking kelp. Yes, we’ve even gotten whales – though pygmy sized ones – on the beach. We also had a bird fallout one year in which the beaches were covered in small migratory birds. It is always a mystery to me.

The Portuguese man o’ war lives at the surface of the ocean. The gas-filled bladder, or pneumatophore, remains at the surface, while the remainder is submerged. Since the man o’ war has no means of propulsion, it is moved by a combination of winds, currents, and tides. Although it can be found anywhere in the open ocean (especially warm water seas), it is most commonly found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific and Indian oceans and in the northern Atlantic Gulf Stream. The man o’ war has been found as far north as the Bay of Fundy and the Hebrides.

They wash ashore along the northern Gulf of Mexico and east and west coasts of Florida. An abundance of Portuguese men o’ war can be found in the waters of Costa Rica, especially in March and April, while they are also found off of Guyana,Colombia and Venezuela. They wash up on the shore during certain months of the year. They are reported abundantly in the waters near Karachi, Pakistan in the summer months, and are also common in the ocean off parts of Australia, where they are known more commonly as ‘blue-bottles’, and New Zealand. During these months, they come ashore in the Gulf of California after rain, where they are known as agua(s) mala(s) by locals. They are also frequently found along the east coast of South Africa, particularly during winter storms if the wind has been blowing steadily on-shore for several hours, as well as around the Hawaiian Islands.

Strong onshore winds may drive them into bays or onto beaches. It is rare for only a single Portuguese man o’ war to be found; the discovery of one usually indicates the presence of many, as they are usually congregated by currents and winds into groups of thousands. Attitudes to the presence of the Portuguese man o’ war vary around the world. Given their sting however, they must always be treated with caution, and the discovery of men o’ war washed up on a beach might lead to the closure of the whole beach. (Wikipedia)

This was the horrific scene after a 200 tonne boulder hurtled on to a picturesque French village, killing a motorist.

The massive rock not only turned over a car being driven by the unidentified victim, but destroyed most of a nearby house in Tenay, near Lyon.

'The accident happened at around 5.15pm on Thursday,' said a local police spokesman in the town, which is in the Rhone-Alpes region of eastern France.
