ศัพท์หลายคำที่ภิกษุอาจจะต้องใช้อธิบายให้ฝรั่งฟัง เช่น ‘พระประธาน’ ซึ่งก็คือ principal Buddha image in a temple ‘พระโพธิสัตว์’ (Bodhisattva) คือ one who seeks salvation for others, especially applied to the Buddha before enlightenment เมื่อพูดถึง ‘พระสงฆ์’ (Sangha) คือ Buddhist monk ‘พุทธบริษัท’ คือ Buddhists หรือ followers of the Buddha


‘พุทธมณฑล’ คือ Buddhist Province ‘พุทธาวาส’ (ส่วนหนึ่งของวัด มีโบสถ์ วิหาร และเจดีย์ ที่ใช้ประกอบสังฆกรรมและมีกำแพงแยกจากที่อาศัยของพระสงฆ์สามเณร) คือ shrine หรือ niche ส่วนเขตอุโบสถที่เราเรียกว่า ‘พัทธสีมา’ คือ the consecrated precinct of a temple หรือ consecrated area


‘พิธีทางศาสนา’ คือ religious rites ‘พิธีบวช’ คือ ordination ‘พิธีสวด’ คือ prayer service ‘ท่องคาถา’ คือ to recite an incantation ‘ทอดกฐิน‘ (พิธีถวายผ้ากฐินแก่พระสงฆ์) คือ to present robes to monks within a month after the end of the Buddhist Lent ส่วน ‘ทอดผ้าป่า‘ (การเอาผ้าถวายโดยทิ้งไว้เพื่อให้พระชักเอาเอง) คือ to make an off-season offering of robes and other needs to monks


‘ฟังเทศน์’ คือ hear a sermon หรือ listen to a sermon ‘การตรัสรู้’ คือ enlightenment แต่ละวัดจะมี ‘มัคนายก’ (ผู้นำทางในการกุศลหรือผู้ชี้ทางบุญ) คือ temple officiator ‘มหาเถรสมาคม’ (Mahathera council) คือ council of Elders ส่วน ‘มหาเถระ’ คือ senior monk ‘พัดหรือพัดยศที่มอบให้พระภิกษุ’ คือ fan of rank ‘มหานิกาย’ (Mahanikaya) คือ The Great Buddhist Sect และ ‘เถรวาท’ (Theravada) คือ Hinayan School ครับ.
