A cluster of ink-wash paintings, porcelain, Ming and Qing furniture and antiques will go under hammer at 2018 Shanghai Council Auction on December 18 at the Regal Shanghai East Asia Hotel.

Some of the big names at this auction include Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Qi Baishi (1864-1957), Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), Xie Zhiliu (1910-1991) and Fu Baoshi (1904-1965).

The highlight of the exhibition goes to “Pear Blossom and Pigeon” created by Zhang Daqian in 1948.

Born into a family of artists in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, Zhang is one of the best-known and most prodigious Chinese artists of the 20th century.

Zhang studied textile-dyeing in Kyoto. Japan. From 1941 to 1944, he went to Dunhuang in Gansu Province to make replica paintings in the Buddhist Mogao Grottoes. He copied nearly 276 murals and founded a new school of painting based on ancient Buddhist art.

After a successful painting career in Shanghai, he left the country in 1949. He travelled extensively and lived in various places such as Argentina, Brazil and the US, before settling down in Taiwan in 1978.

Originally known as a traditional painter, deteriorating eyesight led Zhang to take up a bolder, more expressive style. By the 1960s he became known as a guiding figure in modern impressionists. A famed meeting between Zhang and Pablo Picasso in Nice, France in 1956 is viewed as a summit between the pre-eminent masters of Eastern and Western art of their time.
