Update 14:08 UTC : More damage reports arrive from Acapulco. Some buildings on harbour area of Acapulco suffered heavy damage. Large cracks and collapsed walls are reported. At least 3 school buildins in Acapulco were also damaged.
Update 14:03 UTC : Damage is reported from some parts of Guerrero. Buildings in San Marcos, Atapulco and Chilpancingo suffered cracks by the quake, Civil protection authorities reported.
Update 13:44 UTC : Civil protection in Mexico City and other regions are now looking for potential damage. Helicopters fly about DF, public buildings (schools, etc.) are unter investigation. No damage is reported yet, while people are starting to return to their houses.
Update 13:16 UTC : Earthquake alarms in Mexico City went on when the quake happened, triggering people to come out of their houses, seconds before the seismic waves arrived.
In Acapulco, 55 km southwest of the epicenter, the quake caused disturbances in the telephone connection.

A very strong earthquake occurred in southern Guerrero, Mexico. It was well felt in Mexico City. USGS ShakeMap expects a strong shaking in epicenter region, which will probably cause light to moderate damage to weak buildings

 

Earthquake rattles southern Mexico, no damage reported

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook southern Mexico on Wednesday and rattled buildings as distant as Mexico City around 250 miles (400 km) away, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.



The epicentre was 11 miles (18 km) northwest of the town of Ayutla de los Libres in the poor southern state of Guerrero, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, revising down an initial reading of 6.4.

It said the tremor struck at a depth of 21.6 miles (34.8 km). A 5.3 magnitude aftershock hit near the popular Pacific coast tourist resort of Acapulco half an hour later.

Buildings swayed for around a minute in Mexico City after the first quake, and several offices in the capital evacuated staff. The quake struck at the height of the morning rush-hour.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said on Twitter that there were no reports of injuries or damage in the capital.

Luis Felipe Puente, national emergency services coordinator, told local television there was no damage reported in Guerrero.

However Guerrero Governor Angel Aguirre Rivero said on Twitter that emergency services were checking buildings in locations including Acapulco following the aftershock.

Update 21:00 UTC: Plan DN-III and Plan “sismo” have been implemented around Acapulco, this means the Mexican Army and civil protection will be able to manage resources and provide help to the people that have been affected by this earthquake.
Update 19:25 UTC :
- The scenic route of Acapulco was closed after a car was hit by a rock.
- There are collapsed homes in the Chinameca neighborhood.
- A building was damaged in the apartment block “El Coloso”,
- The following hospitals have been damaged in Acapulco: Ocotito, Zumpango and the oncology hospital.
- Acapulco has been declared in a state of alert.

Update 19:14 UTC : The airport of Acapulco was damaged with walls cracked, broken windows and fallen ceiling.
Update 16:41 UTC : All school classes in the province of Guerrero have been called off today. At least 5 schools have been reported with structural damage and the school directorate has said that it will inspect every school on potential structural damage before reopening.
Update 16:18 UTC : Guerrero is a Mexican province who has been hit by sometimes very strong earthquakes since many months, some of them exceeding M6. Even the Acapulco area had many quakes in 2012 and 2013, all without serious injuries and only slight damage.

Update 15:27 UTC : Huitzuco is another affected town. Three residental buildings and one chuch suffered minor damage there. Another damaged church is in Taxco, where parts of the ceiling fell down. Two nurses in Iguala were injured by falling pieces of ceiling panel, respectively by a collision with a door in their hospital. More people in Guerrero needed medical help for nervous breakdowns.
Update 15:18 UTC : The Good News: No damage was caused in the states of Veracruz and Puebla.

Update 15:05 UTC : Some houses in Hornos Insurgentes, a part of Acapulco, collapsed. One girl was injured there. (Some of the damage in Acapulco might be caused by an M 5.6 aftershock, which occurred a few minutes after the mainshock)
Rockfall was observed in rural areas of Guerrero, blocking some roads.
Update 14:56 UTC : It seems that also Mexico City was slightly affected. Residents reported cracks to walls in some parts of the town and a crack in a classroom. No big damage among it.
