SOLAR ACTIVITY
--------------

Solar activity during the week was dominated by Catania sunspot group 65 (NOAA AR 1429) that produced three X-class flares, twelve M-class flares, and numerous C-class flares. Other active regions observed during the week did not produce any flares above the M-level.

An X1.1 flare was detected by GOES peaking at 04:09 UT on March 5 at N17E52. It was accompanied by coronal dimmings and a post-eruption arcade observed by SDO/AIA and a full halo CME first detected by the SOHO/LASCO coronagraph at 04:00 UT. Its projected plane of the sky speed was around 1300 km/s. The CME-associated interplanetary disturbance arrived at ACE on March 7 (see below). This eruption was also associated with a strong radio flux in the metric range.
An X5.4 flare was detected by GOES peaking at 00:24 UT on March 7 at N17E27, and an X1.3 flare peaked at 01:14 UT (during the declining phase of the X5.4 flare). According to the SDO/AIA data, each flare was accompanied by coronal dimmings, an EIT wave and a post-eruption arcade, indicating the eruption of two CMEs, and both flares were accompanied by type II radio bursts. The X5.4 flare was accompanied by a full halo CME first appearing in the LASCO C2 field of view at 00:24 UT and propagating at a speed around 2300 km/s. The X1.1 flare was accompanied by another full halo CME first seen in the SOHO/LASCO C2 field of view at 01:36 UT and propagating at a similar speed. The interplanetary disturbance associated with the first halo CME (or perhaps with the ICME resulting from the interaction of the two halos) arrived at ACE on March 8-9 (see below).

An M6.3 flare was detected by GOES peaking at 03:53 UT on March 9 around N15W03. SDO/AIA data show the associated coronal dimmings, EIT wave and a post-eruption arcade, indicating the eruption of a CME. The associated full halo CME was detected by SOHO/LASCO first appearing in the LASCO C2 field of view at 04:14 UT and propagating at a speed around 750 km/s. The associated ICME was detected by ACE on March 12 (see below).

An M8.4 flare was detected by GOES peaking at 17:44 UT on March 10 at N17W24. The flare was accompanied by coronal dimmings, an EIT wave and a post-eruption arcade observed by SDO/AIA, and a full halo CME first detected in the SOHO/LASCO C2 field of view at 18:00 UT.

STEREO/SECCHI COR2 data indicate that the bulk of the CME material was directed northward of the ecliptic plane. The CME plane-of-the-sky speed measured in the LASCO data was around 1040 km/s. The corresponding ICME arrived at the Earth in the afternoon on March 12 (see below).

A partial halo CME first appearing in the LASCO C2 field of view above the south limb at 08:29 UT on March 9 was a backside CME according to the STEREO/SECCHI COR2 data.

The SEP flux at energies above 10 MeV started to rise since around 00:00 UT on March 5 due to the halo CME on March 4, and later increased also due to the CME on March 5, although remaining below the 10 pfu event threshold until March 7. Protons from these CMEs were delayed due to the eastern position of the CME source region.

The SEP flux at energies above 10 MeV started to rise again shortly before 02:00 UT on March 7 and crossed the event threshold shortly before 06:00 UT. The contemporary rise of the proton flux at energies above 50 and 100 MeV indicates that the protons were mostly accelerated at the CME-driven shock associated with the (either of) the two halo CMEs on March 7. Contributions from the interplanetary shocks detected on March 7 (most probably associated with the halo CMEs on March 4 and 5, see below) are not excluded.

The SEP flux continued to increase, with the proton flux at energies above 100 MeV crossing the SEP event threshold (10 pfu) around 10 UT on March 7. The SEP flux peaked at the arrival of the interplanetary shock on March 8. After that the proton flux started to decrease. The flux at energies above 100 MeV went below the 10 pfu event threshold early on March 9, and the flux at energies above 50 MeV - around noon on March 10. The proton flux above 10 MeV remained above the event threshold until the end of the week.


GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY
--------------------

In the beginning of the week, the Earth was inside a slow solar wind flow, and geomagnetic conditions were quiet. The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude increased on March 6, but due to low solar wind speed the geomagnetic conditions remained quiet.

An interplanetary shock was detected at 03:35 UT by ACE and at 03:47 by SOHO/CELIAS on March 7. It was most probably associated with the halo CME erupted on March 4. The solar wind speed remained low (around 420 km/s) but the IMF magnitude reached 18 nT, with the north-south IMF component Bz negative during extended intervals. This resulted in geomagnetic storm conditions during the most of the day, with the Kp index estimated by NOAA reaching 6. Since around 09:00 UT on March 7 and until 16:00 UT on March 9, the real-time plasma measurements by ACE became corrupted by the on-going major SEP event.

Another possible interplanetary shock was detected by SOHO/CELIAS around 12:00 UT on March 7, most probably associated with the halo CME observed on March 5. The IMF magnitude in the post-shock solar wind flow did not increase enough to strengthen the ongoing geomagnetic storm.

An interplanetary shock wave was detected on March 8 at 10:45 UT (by ACE) and at 10:53 (by SOHO/CELIAS). This shock was driven by the ICME (interplanetary CME) associated with the full halo CME observed on March 7. The IMF magnitude increased from around 12 to 25 nT, and then further up to 40 nT but the Bz component was directed predominantly northward. This only resulted in two intervals of Kp = 5 and another two intervals of Kp = 4 as estimated by NOAA.

Around 00:00 UT on March 9, the IMF magnitude in the ICME increased again, and this time the IMF Bz component was directed predominantly southward. This resulted in another geomagnetic storm (Kp = 5-6 as estimated by NOAA). Around 08:18 UT the solar wind speed suddenly increased up to around 950 km/s. Together with still negative (southward) IMF Bz component, this led to strengthening the ongoing geomagnetic storm, with Kp reaching 7 during two intervals (as estimated by NOAA). No obvious CME was detected by SOHO or STEREO coronagraphs in association with this very fast solar wind interval.

The ICME flow was over early on March 10. Geomagnetic conditions became quiet and remained quiet until the end of the week.

Geomagnetic storm in progress. Following the shock observed in ACE
today around 1240 UT, a geomagnetic storm is currently in progress,
ranging from minor to major storm levels (Kp=6 between 15 and 18UT).
Minor storms conditions (K=5) are observed locally. The source is likely
to be the arrival of the flank of the CME linked to the M7.9 flare from
March 13th. Minor storm conditions should prevail in the next 24 hours
with an expected fast solar wind stream from a coronal hole.

COMMENT: Solar activity is expected to remain active with risks of M
class flares, essentially from NOAA AR 1432. This regions produced 2 M
flares during the last 24 hours. The first one, a M2.8 occurred on March
14th, 1521 UT (peak time), and was associated with a CME (speed of ~550
km/s). The second flare occurred on March 16th, and peaked at M1.8 level
at 0752UT. It was also associated with a CME (speed of ~450 km/s). Both
events are unlikely to trigger significant geomagnetic activity, in any
case not before the end of March 17th for the first one. Geomagnetic
activity is expected to reach minor storm levels by the end of March
15th or during the course of March 16th due to a coronal hole becoming
geoeffective. It could coincide with the crossing of the flank of the
CME of March 13th, which was not Earth directed.

Important variations in the magnetic field, observed by satellites in certain areas of the globe, could herald an inversion of the poles. This phenomenon has already come about several times in the history of the planet. Is the Earth losing its compass? This is what a study by the Department of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism of the Paris Geophysical Institute (l'Institut de physique du globe de Paris [IPG]) would have us believe. ​

We are all contained by the Earth's magnetic field without really noticing it. We become aware of it only when we use a compass to find our way. This is the most obvious manifestation of the Earth's magnetism, which has existed for 3 billion years and is generated 3,000 kilometers under our feet by the stirring of our planet's liquid iron core. This liquid iron core causes the Earth to act like a giant magnet; the magnetic lines are organized on a bipolar basis, more or less in alignment with the Earth's rotational axis. ​

This bipolar configuration, however, is not permanent. It varies with the movement of the Earth's liquid core, and in the past, the positions of the magnetic poles have been known to switch entirely. These phenomena were verified by paleo-magnetic studies on ancient volcanic basalts. The latter contain magnetic grains that kept both the orientation and strength of the Earth's magnetic field when they became solid.

THE CATCH: Most news agencies have at least placed a disclaimer (sometimes obscure), saying "Though it is unclear if such events (cause of rising sea level) is caused by so-called global warming."

THE DISGUISE: So why the word disguise? Because science has now become a sold-out political instrument used by special interest groups such as the IPCC and the majority of its global warming cabal. We got a great peek into the true nature and motive of this pathetic pack of scientists when the "ClimateGate" emails and documents were hacked from their computers showing a shameless ploy of manipulation, omission, and strong-arm tactics which in my opinion reach the level of felony criminal acts of RICO act.

RICO: The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, commonly referred to as the RICO Act or simply RICO, is a United States federal law that provides for extended criminal penalties and a civil cause of action for acts performed as part of an ongoing criminal organization. The RICO Act focuses specifically on racketeering, and it allows for the leaders of a syndicate to be tried for the crimes which they ordered others to do or assisted them, closing a perceived loophole that allowed someone who told a man to, for example, murder, to be exempt from the trial because they did not actually do it.​

The latest news utterance conveying reports highlight an organization known as the Asian Development Bank - warning countries to prepare for influxes of people fleeing natural disasters as climate change exacerbates rising sea levels, soil degradation and seasonal flooding.

Natural disasters drove 42 million people from their homes in the Asia-Pacific in 2010 and 2011, though it was unclear how many of those were caused by climate change, the bank said in a study released Tuesday.

It said that one-third of Southeast Asia's population lives in at-risk areas, including Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Six of the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change are in the Asia-Pacific. Bangladesh tops the list followed by India, Nepal, the Philippines, Afghanistan and Myanmar.

OKAY HOLD IT: How did you swing from disasters to "climate change" (code for global warming)? Are people so-called fleeing because of earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes etc. - or did you say "climate change" (code for global warming)? Oh, I didn't think so. So let's continue.

The study did not make any specific projections for migration induced by climate change, noting that the numbers are difficult to estimate as migration decisions often depend on a wide array of factors, including poverty. Well, now that was "convenient disguise" of shuffle-the-cards. Perhaps what you meant to say is: "There is scientific evidence which indicates natural disasters are on the rise." But let's continue.

"Given that climate change acts as an aggravating factor for environmental degradation, it is expected to boost the number of people migrating because of environmental changes, both sudden and slow onset. Though the amplitude of these movements remains difficult to forecast, climate change is likely to become a major driver of migration in the 21st century," it said. And who is "it"? Let's continue.

It cited the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a U.N. network of 2,000 scientists. Yes, the very same "network" of which half has abandoned ship. In fact, several of these same scientist have come forward telling the public the data of which their analysis was based - is often false and most is misrepresented.

Back to the 'Disguise': There is a good chance we will see mass migration in coastal areas around the world - but NOT because of some 1977 made up name by James Hansen called "global warming" - No, it will be a result of natural cyclical events the Earth has seen many times before. The causes of such cycles vary; however, the Sun, the Earth's core, and even our galaxy Milky Way have always played the leading role.


This nonsense of CO2 as the cause of such events has no standing. Why? Because empirical scientific data says so. This being the case, the only tried and tested manipulation ploy, was to use the old "win the hearts and minds of the public". Well, it might have worked in the 70's and 80's, but then came Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Paul Allen and rest who followed. We are now empowered to do our own research using our God given talent of discernment, and for many of us, our learned skill of 'critical thinking'.

Humm, maybe this is why there are more earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, and hurricanes..... just a thought.

March 16, 2012: The human eye is crucial to astronomy. Without the ability to see, the luminous universe of stars, planets and galaxies would be closed to us, unknown forever. Nevertheless, astronomers cannot shake their fascination with the invisible.

Outside the realm of human vision is an entire electromagnetic spectrum of wonders. Each type of light--­from radio waves to gamma-rays--reveals something unique about the universe. Some wavelengths are best for studying black holes; others reveal newborn stars and planets; while others illuminate the earliest years of cosmic history.

NASA has many telescopes "working the wavelengths" up and down the electromagnetic spectrum. One of them, the Fermi Gamma-Ray Telescope orbiting Earth, has just crossed a new electromagnetic frontier.

"Fermi is picking up crazy-energetic photons," says Dave Thompson, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "And it's detecting so many of them we've been able to produce the first all-sky map of the very high energy universe."

The light we see with human eyes consists of photons with energies in the range 2 to 3 electron volts. The gamma-rays Fermi detects are billions of times more energetic, from 20 million to more than 300 billion electron volts. These gamma-ray photons are so energetic, they cannot be guided by the mirrors and lenses found in ordinary telescopes. Instead Fermi uses a sensor that is more like a Geiger counter than a telescope. If we could wear Fermi's gamma ray "glasses," we'd witness powerful bullets of energy – individual gamma rays – from cosmic phenomena such as supermassive black holes and hypernova explosions. The sky would be a frenzy of activity.
Before Fermi was launched in June 2008, there were only four known celestial sources of photons in this energy range. "In 3 years Fermi has found almost 500 more,” says Thompson.
What lies within this new realm?

"Mystery, for one thing," says Thompson. "About a third of the new sources can't be clearly linked to any of the known types of objects that produce gamma rays. We have no idea what they are."

The rest have one thing in common: prodigious energy.

"Among them are super massive black holes called blazars; the seething remnants of supernova explosions; and rapidly rotating neutron stars called pulsars.”
And some of the gamma rays seem to come from the 'Fermi bubbles' – giant structures emanating from the Milky Way's center and spanning some 20,000 light years above and below the galactic plane.

Exactly how these bubbles formed is another mystery.

Now that the first sky map is complete, Fermi is working on another, more sensitive and detailed survey.

"In the next few years, Fermi should reveal something new about all of these phenomena, what makes them tick, and why they generate such 'unearthly' levels of energy," says David Paneque, a leader in this work from the Max Planck Institute in Germany.

For now, though, there are more unknowns than knowns about "Fermi's world."

Says Thompson: "It's pretty exciting!"
